What is the Manuka Honey Rating System? UMF and MGO

3 minutes read

The Rating System (UMF)

Many people assume that the UMF™ and MGO are the same. However, that is not true. The UMF™ is a comprehensive testing that consists of four factors that measure the quality of Mānuka honey being produced in New Zealand. On the other hand, MGO refers to one of the four quality factors that is measured in the UMF™ test.

The Unique Mānuka Factor (UMF™) trademark is recognised internationally as a quality assurance system for Mānuka honey. Every product that contains Mānuka honey with the UMF™ trademark must undergo rigorous quality tests conducted by the UMFHA.

The UMF™ Four Factor Quality Testing

The authentic New Zealand Mānuka honey contains more than 2000 unique compounds that contribute to the long list of benefits it provides us with. The UMF™ Four Factor Quality Test validates the potency, authenticity, shelf life and freshness of genuine Mānuka honey sold by the honey producers in New Zealand. The four quality factors are:

  • Methylglyoxal (MGO)

This is the source of Mānuka honey’s antibacterial properties, as well as, the measure of the strength of the Mānuka honey. Generally, the higher the MGO content, the stronger the concentration of Mānuka honey.

  • Leptosperin

This compound is present only in the nectar of the Mānuka flower which is native to New Zealand. The measure of leptosperin helps us to determine whether the Mānuka honey is genuine or not.

  • Dihydroxyacetone (DHA)

DHA converts to MGO over time in good honey. The higher the DHA content, the longer the MGO compounds thrive in the Mānuka honey. Thus, the best Mānuka honey has more than 70 mg/kg DHA.

  • Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF)

The concentration of HMF measures the condition of the Mānuka honey that it is not overheated or stored away for too long.

Why is Mānuka Honey Expensive?

Here are a few reasons why Mānuka honey is so expensive:

  • Rare

The trees that Mānuka honey comes from are found only in New Zealand. Since the trees are limited in numbers and the demand for Mānuka honey is high, that pushes the price up.

  • Cost of helicopters

The manuka trees grow at high altitudes. The easiest way for the beekeepers to monitor the bees and collect the honey is by helicopters.

  • A very short period of time to harvest

When the Mānuka flowers bloom, the harvesters have about two weeks to eight weeks to harvest. Any time outside of this window, the honey is not ready to be harvested and will not taste good. With such a small period of time for harvesting, very small quantities of Mānuka honey is harvested.

  • Shipping costs

As Mānuka honey comes from New Zealand, it has to pass through checkpoints and pay shipping fees. The further you are from the home of Mānuka honey, the more expensive it will be.

Is it Safe for Pregnant Women and Children to Take Manuka Honey

Mānuka honey is safe for you to eat during pregnancy. It boosts your immune system, decreases inflammation and prevents yeast infection. If you are diagnosed with type 1, type 2 or gestational diabetes, it is advised to avoid consuming Mānuka honey as it contains glucose and fructose (sugars).

Mānuka honey should not be given to infants as it contains bacteria that can cause infants to become seriously ill though it is completely safe for adults to consume. It is recommended for children under 2 years of age to avoid consuming Mānuka honey as their digestive systems are not mature enough and still developing.
